Biological Medicine for the Young at Heart

(Part 5)

In the last article Dr. Fitzpatrick expanded further concerning some guidelines for us as environmentalists. Today she gives us some strategies for detoxing ourselves so we can live a long and healthy life, not just physically, but mentally, emotionally and spiritually as well.

Fourthly you must understand and support your liver which is the most sophisticated recycling plant in the universe. This vital organ is the model for “reducing, reusing and recycling” everything that is absorbed into your system via your lungs, skin or mouth. Any of the 80,000 chemicals in our environment introduced into your system is processed through your liver. All pharmaceuticals are processed in your liver and many are liver toxic. Alcohol, in excess is overwhelming to the liver and a hangover is caused by your liver cleaning up what is an acute poisoning from too much alcohol the night before.

If you begin by avoiding toxic exposures as much as possible, your liver will take care of the rest. Easy to find herbs such as milk thistle and Taraxacum ( dandelion) support the function of your liver and next article will present a simple recipe for a liver gall bladder flush which you can use periodically.

Fifth, support the built in systems of elimination which include skin, kidneys, colon and lungs. Water flushes and washes your system. Drink ½ your body weight in ounces of water a day. ( If you weigh 120 lb., drink 60 ounces of water a day, 180 lbs. drink 90oz of water per day). If you are well-hydrated, you should urinate completely clear, colorless urine every three hours while you are awake. Remember that you will not feel thirsty until after you are already mildly dehydrated.

Regular, well-formed bowel movements are the mainstays of a healthy ecosystem!  If you are constipated, the feces stay in your colon longer than necessary so that toxicities which are meant to be eliminated are reabsorbed.

Sweating is a major form of detoxification and you should exercise to a gentle sweat routinely. Regular exercise also promotes lymph drainage and is excellent for your mood and well being.

Massage ( yes we should massage each other regularly) releases toxicities and promotes lymph drainage.

Sixth, consider the fabulous human brain you were born with!

There are as many neurons in the human brain as there are stars in the galaxy. There are several trillion cells in your skull which relay and receive trillions of messages across a minuscule gap between the cells. Each neuron sprouts 1,000 to 10,000 connections to the others creating a staggering complexity. If the brain contains 10 trillion neurons and each neuron supports up to 10,000 connections with other brain cells, the most sophisticated computer system on earth pales in comparison with the simplest human brain on earth.

The brain itself is bathed in fluids rich in biochemicals that supply nutrition, neurotransmitters, neurohormones and other proteins. The brain is energized by glucose and the physical structure is maintained by replenishing proteins and fats. Care and restoration of the brain is essential to the health of your internal ecosystem.

Again, micro exposures to neurotoxins combined with inadequate nutrition during the prenatal period, childhood and adolescence causes subtle yet deeply damaging effects not only to your ability to think and remember, but also to your mood and your sense of well being. Learn about the nutritional needs of your body. Eat food that is low on the food chain. Do not eat anything that did not come directly from the earth. Essential fats are the building block to every brain and nerve cell in your body and all of your hormones are created from fats.

Finally, an overview of your fabulous internal ecosystem would not be complete without mentioning the non physical or energetic system which orchestrates this most complicated of ecosystems.

·        Hone your instincts and your intuitions

·        pay attention to your night dream and your day dreams

·        play, pray or meditate and be in community on a daily basis

·        Eat well celebrate your incarnation in this body in this country in this time and space, and do not despair.

·        Despite the challenges posed by what has been done to your world, with proper attention and maintenance your body can process the toxic insults and you can stay healthy.

Understanding health and disease from the viewpoint of the maintenance of an ecosystem is the basis for staying healthy and strong in order to become the change that our mother earth needs.

(Part 4)

In the last article Dr. Fitzpatrick talked about the resiliency of our bodies and some guidelines for us as environmentalists. Today she expands further on this.

Third, we must understand the fabulous biorhythm of our endocrine or glandular system. The endocrine system is a superhighway for sharing information in every part of the internal ecosystem. The endocrine glands include the pituitary/hypothalamus in  the brain, the thyroid in the neck, the pancreas in the abdomen the adrenal glands which sit on top of your kidneys, and the reproductive glands ( in the root chakra!)Your endocrine system orchestrates metabolism, energy production, muscle growth, strength, stamina cell repair and mood. It is directly related to the health of your immune system and your brain including thought processes, mood and mental clarity.

Endocrine disruptors in the form of chemical exposures are a critical threat to our health. Exposures to chemicals which disrupt the endocrine system in parts per million or even parts per trillion, sabotage fertility, erode intelligence, undermine the immune system and alter behavior.

Synthetic hormones mimic natural ones and wreak havoc in entire systems. Synthetic hormones are in our soil, water and food and also leach from plastics of all kinds. Unborn children and infants are at highest risk from endocrine disruption. In human populations, sperm counts have dropped significantly in the past 40 years, infertility rates in the western world are increasing and developmental problems including ADHD and autism are skyrocketing.

In bird populations the effects of endocrine disruption is already clear. In the Northwestern US eagles began laying eggs with such fragile shells that they would break before hatching killing the unborn birds. In a nesting ground in Wales a few years ago, one million birds arrived to nest and that year no babies were born. Species are being born with reproductive anomalies and there have been populations of animals that have no parenting instincts, leaving newborn offspring to die.

Avoidance of plastic wrapped food, food containers, avoiding all hormonally treated animal products( which includes not only meat and milk, but cheese, yogurt and ice cream), avoidance of industrially farmed eggs, avoidance of any food or drink heated in or served from plastic or Styrofoam containers( tea and coffee and hot chocolate are often served in plastic cups in public places). Any bleached paper contains dioxin which is very harmful. Avoid bleached toilet paper, paper towels, tampons, sanitary pads, coffee filters and any make- up pads or cotton balls that are bleached.  (You can usually tell from the ‘whiteness’ of the product.)

Biological Medicine for the Young at Heart

(Part 3)

In the last article Dr. Fitzpatrick mentioned some of the grim toxicities we, as a society have created, and how they are interfering with our health. Here she talks about the resiliency of our bodies and some guidelines for us as environmentalists.

The call to action is to understand your precious internal ecosystem and to support and maintain it. As with any ecosystem, our bodies are resilient and have built in ways to detoxify and rebuild. All healthy living systems have the capacity to restore and rebuild. By cleaning, detoxifying and re balancing our internal ecosystems we insure the improved health of the next generation of cells, tissues and organ systems. Here are some guidelines for us as environmentalists to follow as we approach care and maintenance of our beings.

First, avoid exposure to any and all chemicals. Remember that exposure occurs through what you eat and drink but also through your lungs and skin. Read labels. Do not consume through your mouth or skin anything you cannot pronounce or spell!  If you do not know what an ingredient is, what it looks like or where it comes from, avoid it!

Second, we must stop the relentless war on germs !!  Bacteria and fungi are the very matrix of life on earth. Our intestines should contain 8-12 lbs. of bacteria! The GI tract is home to 100,000  digest all of the food you eat to provide the substrates for the more than 400 biochemical reactions occurring in your systems at any given second throughout your life.

Your gut also houses a certain amount of beneficial fungus which is in direct symbiosis with the healthy bacteria of your gut. The bacteria and fungi literally feed each other.  (That’s why if you take an antibiotic you are likely to get a yeast overgrowth in your system)

Your body wisely creates fungus to bind heavy metals that come through your system, particularly mercury and lead. If you have recurrent fugal infections, it could be an indication of heavy metal toxicity. In healthy balance, the fungi do not cause overgrowth because they are balanced by the millions of healthy gut bacteria that feed on them.

Your skin is populated by necessary, healthy bacteria that provide a barrier to harmful absorption of toxins through skin.

Antibiotic overuse poses a huge threat to our health. There are 21 million pounds of antibiotics in  animals in the US and nine million pounds of antibiotics in people. In response to repeated exposures of antibiotic laden environments, bacteria will change form and mutate. Bacteria and fungi can change and specialize 100 times faster than human cells.

The over use of antibiotics, the “war on germs ‘ is harmful for two reasons. The first is that antibiotics destroy the gut bacteria that are essential for good health. The second reason is that since all of us are exposed to antibiotics in dairy products, milk, and all meats, we are creating “super strains” of bacteria in our world that will disrupt all ecosystems at the core.

Next issue we move on to understanding our hormonal system

Biological Medicine

for the Young at Heart (Part 2)

Since WWII we have released more than 80,000 chemicals into our environment. Very few of these have been tested for safety to humans. No woman on this planet has breast milk that is not full of chemicals. Pesticides were created from surplus supplies of chemical warfare developed during WWII. Not wanting to waste these toxic chemicals, scientists diluted these chemical warfare leftovers to create pesticides, fungicides and herbicides.  As it stands now, a chemical can be put into in our food, water, air or into cosmetics and skin care products until it is proven harmful.

Regardless of whether you yourself take pharmaceuticals (meaning medicines made by drug companies) there are detectable residues of more than 90 such drugs in all fresh water in this country.  Each of us is exposed, on a daily basis to antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, antidepressants etc. which are excreted by the people who use them. This is a profound reminder of how we are all connected.

The FDA allows cows milk to contain 4% blood from the cow herself, since in commercial dairies cows are milked so much that their udders bleed.  Yes, the FDA has a “ safe” limit  of the cow’s blood in the milk you may drink.

Contrary to popular belief, fluoride in toothpaste and in our water supply is extremely toxic. Again, after WWII there was an excess of fluoride containing effluence from chemical plants which was dumped into our water supply under the pretense of protecting tooth enamel. Fluorosis poses a risk to health and, in fact, fluoride is labeled on toothpaste tubes as a drug that should be avoided by children less than six years old.

Avoid exposure to heavy metals. These include cadmium, lead, aluminum, antimony, arsenic and mercury, to name a few. Sources of exposure include jewelry, aluminum cans and foil, paints, gasoline and other petroleum products, and DENTAL WORK!  Silver looking fillings in your teeth contain 45% mercury, and contrary to the statements by the ADA, mercury in fillings is extremely toxic, particularly to your immune system. Some dentists no longer place amalgam fillings. However, if your mother had silver fillings when she was pregnant with you, you probably have mercury toxicity. Studies of cord blood of newborn infants reports triple the amount of mercury as is found in the mother. Mercury is found in childhood vaccines and in many anti-infective agents as well in many eye drops. The trade name for mercury is Thimerosal. Avoid it! The list of dangers to life on earth is long, complicated and increasingly familiar.

Biological Medicine

for the Young at Heart (Part 1)

There is an ancient Chinese idea which teaches how precious it is to live on earth in a human form.

Imagine a vast ocean, with clear endless water. There is one piece of wood, and only one piece, floating on the surface: it is a flat piece of drift wood with a single small hole through it.  In this vast ocean there lives a single blind turtle. This beautiful old creature surfaces only once every 100 years, and remember, she is blind. And so the teaching asks “ How likely is it that the blind turtle will surface so that her head sticks through the hole in the lone piece of driftwood as she surfaces once in 100 years? That is how likely it is to be incarnated as a human being.”

In our modern culture, we do not grow up recognizing how precious our bodies are. We do not have a clear understanding of how to care for our systems, nor do we understand the internal workings of our beings.  Our bodies are  fine-tuned systems  as intricate and as interdependent as external ecosystems such as a lake, a rainforest or a swamp. Unless we learn to care for ourselves the way we care for the external environment, we cannot consider ourselves environmentalists.

It is a call to action to each of us as members of Bioneers to change the paradigm of standard allopathic medicine in keeping with the call for change in public policy, economic policy, social justice, farming etc.

We cannot have healthy people without a healthy mother earth and likewise we cannot have a healthy earth without healthy people.

Environmental insults run rampant, and everything that we do to the earth affects human health in one way or another.

To begin cultivating a change in the way we approach health care, we must first recognize that the thinking in western medicine about health and disease is incorrect. Symptoms such as inflammation, fever, a cough, diarrheas etc. are your body’s wisdom. Instead of blocking the symptom with an anti-inflammatory or an anti-fever drug, physicians should think ofis an organ with the second largest surface area of your body.  Anything you put on your skin is absorbed directly into your bloodstream.

As Bioneers  the challenge to you to stay in good health is a larger challenge than any of older generations have ever faced. Learn about your internal ecosystem, practice vigilant avoidance and work to teach your friends and families about this new eco medicine.

I will mention some of the grim toxicities that we have created as a society, and ways in which these interfere with health in the next newsletter.
